The weather slowly improved and I was able to get myself to Ferrara in Emilia Romagna, another walled town with a famous castle, a University and some of the best cycling pathways in ItalyChristmas was over but the atmosphere was still influenced by it with outdoor gift markets, decorated trees and even some four legged citizens.
Another quick pedal through the plains brought me to Bologna, a tranquil town with the oldest University in the Western World and with a pasta named after it. My old classmate Paolo doing it right....
By now New Year was around the corner so I went west to Reggio Emilia and stayed in a converted farmhouse where the party was held in the barn.
